Math: In math we are working on pace value and numbers to 120. Students should be able to recognize numbers and be able to show a representation of them including tens and ones. They should also be able to determine if a number is greater than, less than, or equal to. We are now partictipating in Math Super Stars. This is a math challenge for your child and should be turned in Fridays with their homework. Students will get points for each turned in and this program is meant to be fun, not frustrating. So just try your best! It's alright if they don't know all the answers. That's what learning is about:)
Science: We are working on force and motion. They can determine the different types of motion such as push, pull, zig zag, straight, slow, and back and forth. We will also be demonstrating how an object can change motion and the effects that is has.
Social Studies: With February being black history month we are learning about Famous black Americans and their contributions to America. We are also learning about people who are famous for heroic acts and what a good citizen is.
Language Arts: In writing we are creating our own narrative stories. We are including an opening sentence, and ending, correct spelling for high frequency words, beginning capitalization, end punctuation, and at least 5 sentences. Ask your child about a story that they have written in class.
Reading: We are doing a lot of reading at school and hope you are doing a lot of reading at home! We are practicing high frequency words and the phonics words of the week. Don't forget to practice these words nightly. Our spelling words change weekly and so do the handful of high frequency words for the week. However, there is a list of the high frequency words in their take home folder and these are words that need to be read fluently by the end of the year. Congratulations to those students who have mastered them already! We are also doing retells of the stories in sequence that we read and are comparing our stories to other text.
Of course we are working on a lot more, but this is just a short summative so that you can talk to your children about what we are doing in class and help them to extend their learning at home.
